About

News Literacy Lab is a non-profit ORGANISATION THAT WILL HELP PEOPLE DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATE THE NEWS AND DEVELOP AN ACCURATE WORLDVIEW.

The News Literacy Lab is dedicated to empowering young people by equipping them with essential skills to navigate the news in today’s world. NLL believes that news literacy is not only an essential life skill but a powerful catalyst for positive change.

Our education program does more than just treat the symptoms of a polluted information environment; it empowers individuals to actively participate in shaping a healthier information ecosystem and advocates for systemic action to address the root causes of harmful and misleading information.

With a strong focus on solutions journalism and mental health, the Lab’s mission is to leverage the power of news literacy to enhance our individual and collective wellbeing.

Why We Exist

BECAUSE NEWS LITERACY IS MORE THAN FAKE NEWS. MISINFORMATION IS NOT THE ONLY HAZARD THAT PREVENTS US FROM BEING ACCURATELY INFORMED, THEREFORE CREATING DEFENCES AGAINST IT IS AN IMPORTANT BUT INCOMPLETE SOLUTION.

We need to expand what it means to be news literate and, in doing so, expand the possibility for solutions. This will include constructive journalism as an antidote to the misrepresentation created by the negativity bias. News literacy must also look beyond how the news is produced to how the news is processed when we consume it. By understanding our internal biases and how they manipulate information, we can better protect ourselves from the distortions they create. By having this three-layered approach, we will create more scope for the application of news literacy to create effective change.
